March 15: Program: Hiking & Biking in Slovenia

Date: 03/15/18 07:00 pm

North Conway Library presents:
“Hiking and Biking in Slovenia”
With Theo & Melanie Stibbons on March 15 at 7 pm

The North Conway Public Library invites you to attend the third of its 2018 Thursday Night Program Series. Theo & Melanie Stibbons will share their experiences from hiking and biking vacations in Slovenia. This event is on Thursday night, March 15, at 7 p.m. at the Weather Discovery Center on Main Street in North Conway Village.

Slovenia, the small central European country that once belonged to Yugoslavia, is best known for its beautiful mountains, breathtaking gorges, serene lakes, and gorgeous Mediterranean coastline. Last year, the Stibbons set off to hike the Soca River Trail in Slovenia which has been described as one of the most beautiful rivers in the world because of its emerald green water which it retains throughout its whole length- a rare feat of nature.

The Soča Trail is considered by many to be the most beautiful section of the entire Alpe-Adria-Trail, a hiking trail that connects Austria, Slovenia and Italy. The trail runs from the foot of Grossglockner, through the Soča Valley, and ends on the Adriatic Coast.

The Soca Trail follows the river from its source high in the Julian Alps in the north-west of the country to the end of the trail in the lovely town of Bovec, including a distance of approx. 15 miles through the Triglav National Park (Slovenia's only National Park) and the Soca Valley with its wider floodplain.

The trail is well mapped and marked and can be walked comfortably. It has a wide variety of terrain and many spectacular hanging bridges and deep gorges.

The Stibbons will also include some information and slides of cycling in north-west Slovenia.

Slovenia is about 85% the size of New Hampshire, and is often called the “Green Country” because more than half of the country is forested. It is bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia and has a coastline on the Adriatic Sea of 27 miles.

Some may well remember the Stibbons’ former presentations for the North Conway Library about other hiking trips in England, Scotland, and Wales, on canal cruises in England, and an East Indies sea trek. They have also been the featured speakers for several AMC International Dinner programs talking about their many travel adventures.

This program will be held at the Weather Discovery Center; no reservations necessary. There will be time after the presentation for questions and discussion. Homemade cookies will be served and coffee is generously provided by Frontside Grind in North Conway.

The program is free of charge, although donations to the Library are greatly appreciated. For more information about the program, call the North Conway Library at 603-356-2961 or email info@northconwaylibrary.com .
